Circle 33 Housing, East London

Circle 33 Housing, East London
The diverse ways in which Victorian terraced houses have been converted, adapted, restored, and reconverted testifies to their enduring value. The outline proposal shown here uses this precedent for the planning of new social housing. A terrace of 'houses' is proposed, each house including three very different types: studios/one bed flats with substantial gardens on the ground floor, open plan 'lofts' with lightwells on the first floor, and three bedroom maisonettes with large roof terraces on the top two floors.
By placing small units on the ground floor, we are able to provide individual front doors, lobbies and staircases for all, within a tightly-planned envelope. This is felt to be crucial for security, flexibility of ownership, and disposes with many management problems.
This project was featured in the Architecture Foundation's exhibition in London and book: 'Accommodating Change - Innovations in Housing'
