Our entry to this prestigious, international competition won First Prize. The project is phased to allow for continuity of the existing community during demolition of the existing tenements. The site includes a large area of unbuilt brownfield land which poses problems of security and maintenance. The one and two storey terraced houses are set within a landscape of stone-filled gabions which terrace the sloping site and provide 'nests' for the new houses on the sheltered side of the hill. A new, sheltering woodland is planted in the position and plan shape of an original woodland shown in the earliest extant maps of the area. A heather moorland is created on the brow of the hill, with its fine views. The existing need for allotments and pigeon lofts is provided for on the open slopes of the hill. The houses are designed to be flexible, to accommodate changing patterns of living and working. |
